Do you ever have moments in your life that have a soundtrack? Often I will hear songs that remind me of specific times in my life, certain joys, sometimes pain. Other times when I hear familiar music it washes over me like a cleansing rain, refreshing my soul, carrying peace.
Jars of Clay has been a soundtrack in my life.
Starting in high school with “Flood.” This song covered my soul, a prayer, a cry.
But if I can’t swim after forty days
and my mind is crushed by the thrashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up – when I’m falling
Lift me up – I’m weak and I’m dying
Lift me up – I need you to hold me
Lift me up – Keep me from drowning again
When I walked into my first day of my job at SPIRIT 105.3 I was excited and nervous. I had recently lost my dad and been laid off and was feeling pretty empty. My first task on my first day was to help set up an intimate Jars of Clay concert being done on campus.
They played “Boys (Lesson One)” and I cried. I cried on my first day of work.
Lesson one – do not hide
Lesson two – there are right ways to fight
And if you have questions
We can talk through the night
So you know who you are
And you know what you want
I’ve been where you’re going
And it’s not that far
It’s too far to walk
But you don’t have to run
You’ll get there in time
When I was pregnant with my son, my first child, Jars of Clay came to the studio to do an interview. Our sweet boy growing in my belly had his first picture with a Christian artist.
There are often moments when my heart can’t find the words it needs and my head can’t articulate what it wants to say; but music fills in the gaps and becomes my prayer. Jars of Clay has been music that has done this for my life. A soundtrack, a whisper to Christ.
“Hymn”
Oh gaze of love so melt my pride
That I may in Your house but kneel
And in my brokenness to cry
Spring worship unto Thee
When beauty breaks the spell of pain
The bludgeoned heart shall burst in vain
But not when love be pointed king
And truth shall Thee forever reign
