I love making money by selling my kids’ old stuff. It is just so rewarding to clean through those closets and bins of toys to declutter the house – and get a little extra spending money, especially with Christmas just around the corner! In the past, I’ve found the whole thing to be super overwhelming but I created a little system for myself that has worked wonders and I’d love to share it with you.
We have an extra room at our house where we have a row of boxes lining the wall.
Box 1 is for Donations. These are the items that we send to Goodwill or Value Village.
Box 2 is for Pass It Along. These are items that I give to my friends. Usually this is children’s clothes, books or toys.
Box 3 is for Resale or Consignment. These are items that I believe will sell at a consignment store, but that would take me way too much effort to list online to sell via Craigslist or Offer Up.
Box 4 is for Selling Online. These are the items that have pretty good value that I think I want to invest time in photographing, listing online and then selling face to face. I am pretty selective with these items because it can be very time consuming, especially when online shoppers don’t show up!
Get to Know Brands
Now that I’ve gone through this process a few times I know the best brands that seem to sell. These might be brands like Guess, Gymboree or other more high-quality brands. Usually toys will also do well in resale.
Create a System
Now that I have my organized boxes in a row, when I clean through the house I can easily throw things in the right boxes. This is especially helpful during closet cleaning time for the kids. Old sizes go out and into the appropriate boxes. It saves me from having mounds of clothes everywhere waiting to be sorted.
