Sometimes I feel insecure when I see the moms with the structured screen time limits and all these planned activities to do in the meantime. And while I do activities with my kids, sometimes I feel like I must be doing something wrong because I don't have specific limits on their TV time.

I looked up “The Bible and Depression” online. And, I got a healthy dose of judgement and condemnation. There were lists of scripture verses that “proved” depression was a failing on the part of the patient. And, the sites included helpful lists of verses to read to “get my head right”. The message was crystal clear: The depression was my fault. I hadn’t prayed enough, I hadn’t studied enough, I had failed God.

I was a working mom for seven years, and let me tell you: I got stuff done. I had a regular workout routine. I did a load of laundry almost every day to keep it from piling up. I food prepped and menu planned so my family had a home-cooked dinner every night. I even went home on my lunch break twice a week and cleaned my entire house in 25 minutes. I had a gigantic to-do list and I rocked it - most of the time.

It was never in the master plan to avoid birthday parties, but it just sort of…happened. And, as it turns out, everyone in our household seems to be completely happy with it. Get your shoes on, please. Get your shoes on. GET YOUR SHOES ON! I was nearing my wits’ end and the day had barely begun. I had not even had my coffee yet. Maybe that was part of the problem. What is it about the last 5 minutes of getting the kids out the door that can turn an uneventful morning into pure chaos? We go from zero to sixty fast.

The woes of potty training. If you’re going through it right now, you can certainly commiserate with me and if you’re past that hurdle, I’m sure you remember the horror of it all. I remember dreading this milestone before my daughter ever reached the age of two. I knew it was going to be a pain in the butt (pun intended) even then but nothing could prepare me for what I was about to encounter, not even my very low expectations to begin with.

Seven-thirty on a Wednesday evening, I walked tiredly downstairs after getting my kids to bed. This night, like many, I had drifted off to sleep in my son’s bed because at six years old he still loves mommy cuddles. I entered the kitchen knowing the evening ahead. Clean the kitchen, attempt to finish up the laundry (and maybe even get it folded), finally pack the lunches that I unsuccessfully had attempted to make as I threw together a quick dinner. I also had to log in to work to finish up something from the day. Oh, and I really wanted to go to bed at a reasonable hour considering I had to be up at 4:30 am the next morning.

  • For the past two years, I have been getting a word in January that sums up the lesson(s) God has in store for me for the year. It started in 2015 when I sensed the word “simplify”. Just the word conjured up visions of peace and I was looking forward to a year of simplifying my life. Sadly, that wasn’t the lesson God had in mind. Instead, my world was filled with illness and chaos. It took me twelve months to learn that I was meant to find simple peace and faith in the midst of illness. It was NOT the lesson I would have chosen for myself.
