I found it on page 55 of a real cookbook with a yellow cover… the recipe that would make so many birthdays and holidays extra special for our family. My chocolate chip poundcake has made a lot of people smile over the last 20 years or so, including some of the ones I love most in the world. It’s so simple to make… and so yummy. I’ve photographed, typed out, and messaged the recipe a hundred times… and, gladly! Page 55 has been smudged and stained often because it was so frequently open in our busy kitchen.
There’s another book in our house that’s got smudges and stains because it was open as I raised my children, as I lived through an almost year-long depression, as I battled anxiety over almost losing our son to ulcerative colitis, as I prayed through my mother’s terrible journey through Covid and back to life, and other heart-wrenching seasons too. That book is my Bible.
The good news contained in God’s word is so simple… just as simple as taking pudding and cake mix and a few other ingredients, and making a cake that brings joy.
John 3:16 says:
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus opened His arms on the cross willingly to die for your sins and mine. And then He rose again, burying our fear of dying and opening the door to heaven. His arms remain open today to receive you. Just believe! And ask for you sins to be forgiven. He will take away your sins and give you peace in exchange.
Romans 10:9-10 says:
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
Jesus wants to give you the gifts of peace now and living forever with Him. If anyone asks me for the recipe for our family’s melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip poundcake, I willingly share it. Jesus and I have something in common – we just want you to ask!
1 John 1:9 says:
“…If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
Whenever I need to bring something to a party or if I just want to bless someone, the chocolate chip poundcake is my go-to. And I can tell you, the words right there in the middle of God’s word are emotional lifelines… my absolute go-to when I am feeling scared, lost, or uncertain. My heart has clung to the promises more times than I can count and my tears have surely stained those pages.
Psalm 34:18 says: “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
Whenever someone tries the chocolate chip poundcake for the first time, they usually say, “THIS IS SO GOOD!” There is Costco sample after Costco sample of how good God is in the bible. You only need to open God’s Word and get to know Him by reading it. You’ll see!
Psalm 34:8 says:
“Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!”
Enjoy this recipe and please… pass it on!

Mom’s Simple Chocolate Chip Poundcake
Ingredients:
1 package of instant chocolate fudge pudding
1 box of yellow cake mix
3/4 cup sugar
¾ cup vegetable oil
¾ cup water
1 cup sour cream
4 eggs, beaten
¾ bag of milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips
Handful of Confectioner’s sugar for dusting
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a 10 inch Bundt pan or a 9 X 13 pan.
With a hand mixer, mix the dry pudding, cake mix, and sugar. One at a time, add the oil, water, eggs, and sour cream. When it looks pretty smooth, add the chocolate chips and mix them in gently with a nice big spoon. Yes, you can use the WHOLE BAG if you want!
Bake for 60 minutes in your preheated oven. Cake is done when a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Dust with confectioners’ sugar before cutting and serving.
Serve with love.
