There are a lot of old sayings that come directly from scripture, such as:
“A fool and his money are soon parted”
Proverbs 21:20
“At my wit’s end”
Psalm 107:27
“Bite the dust”
Psalm 72:9
“By the skin of our teeth”
Job 19:20.
The one that stuck out to me was:
“Apple of my eye”
Deuteronomy 32:10, Psalm 17:8,
Proverbs 7:2, Zechariah 2:8.
To me, September is synonymous with apples. We harvest apples in September and kids used to bring shiny apples to their new teachers at the beginning of the school year. I love this book page from an old book of months.

Apples are also mentioned a number of times in the Bible.
Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”
Or how about:
“As an apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the young men.” Song of Solomon 2:3
And then there are a number of times “apple of his eye” is mentioned.
“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” Psalm 17:8
“He found him in a desert land and cared for him, keeping him as the apple of his eye.” Deuteronomy 32:10
“For this is what the LORD Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye”. Zechariah 2:8
Apparently, the apple of the eye is thought to be the pupil of the eye, which is considered to be very precious (without one, a person could not see).
So, in honor of September and apples and scripture, let’s craft some easy apples! This would be a fun craft to do with your kids, or you could spend a quiet afternoon making a whole bushel of them while the kids are in school.
Materials needed:
- Cardstock
- A pencil
- Scissors
- Construction or scrapbook paper
- Glue
- Optional: twigs
Instructions:
Fold a piece of cardstock in half and draw a simple half-apple shape. Make sure the bottom is a bit flat so your apple will stand when it’s done.

When unfolded, your apple shape should be identical on both sides.

Trace 6-8 apples on your colored paper (I used 8).

Have your kids cut the shapes out. This would be a great scissor skills exercise.

When your apple shapes are cut, fold each one in half.

Place glue on the top folded edge of one apple and place another apple on top.

PC: Ann Kirsten
Continue gluing an apple on top until all eight are stacked and glued (a glue stick works great for this). Make sure the folded edges are even.

Use a chip-clip to press the folded edges together until you’re sure they’re stuck tight.

Place a twig (or a cut piece of brown paper) on top of the folded edges and glue in place.

Lastly, glue the final two edges together and use a chip-clip again to hold everything together while the glue dries.

Voila! Apples!

Place them around your house and tell each member of your family that they are the apple of God’s eye!
Added lesson: Have your kids do a search and find more everyday sayings that came from the Bible. Here’s a few more to start with:
- “A little bird told me” — Ecclesiastes 10:20
- “Drop in the bucket” — Isaiah 40:15
- “Pride goes before a fall” — Proverbs 16:18
Happy September!
