Poppies are not only beautiful, delicate flowers, but they are also a powerful symbol of Memorial Day. Red poppies bloomed all over the churned-up battlefields during World War I which is why we still use them today to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Not only in World War I, but in the numerous wars and battles that America has known, members of the U.S. Armed Forces have bravely answered the call to fight for our freedom and many never returned. This poppy flower craft is such a great way to teach our kids about the reason we have Memorial Day. Whether it’s with your children at home, grandkids, or a classroom full of students, this is such an important symbol to discuss with them. It’s also a fun way to make a little bouquet centerpiece or even hand out the popsicle stick flowers to neighbors and family members on Memorial Day weekend!
What you’ll need:
- Craft sticks (I used green but you could also color regular popsicle sticks with a marker in a pinch)
- Red cupcake liners (these are mini, but regular size work nicely!)
- Scissors
- Black Sharpie or marker
- Masking tape
- Black Glitter (optional)
- Poppy Seeds (optional)
- Elmer’s Glue (only needed if using poppy seeds or glitter)

PC: Maria Magee
Directions:
Take two liners at a time. On the first one, trim just around the edges to make a wavy, poppy petal design.
On the second liner, cut more off than you did with the first one, this will be layered on top of the larger liner to look like petals.

PC: Maria Magee
Roll a small piece of masking tape to stick the small liner to the larger one.
Roll another piece of tape to stick the entire flower to the craft stick stem.
If you are only using markers, color a black circle in the center of your flower.
If using glitter or poppy seeds, put a large dot of glue in the center of the flower and pour the seeds or glitter on. (we did a few of each!)

PC: Maria Magee
Allow the glue to dry.
“For all people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” -1 Peter 1:24-25
