The other night I was holding my daughter close, feeling her heart beat against me. She was curled up in her cat pajamas talking about the day she had and what she hopes to do tomorrow. Her skin was warm and her voice full of joy. We laughed and talked about something silly.
When she ran off to get one of our cats for a forced snuggle break, I grabbed my phone and hopped on Facebook for just a minute, but that’s all it took. I saw the faces of the sweet girls in Texas who won’t share their silly stories with their moms at bedtime anymore. I saw pictures of the flood waters raging. I saw the comments of pain for what could have been and what will never be.
There are no words when tragedy like what happened in Kerrville Texas happens. There is not a single word to say to make the unbearable pain more bearable. The only way I know through such a heartbreak is through the person of Jesus.
I hope tragedy won’t strike our family. I hope we will all have a long life together. Really, though only God knows what the future will hold. This world is so so painful. All I can offer is this simple prayer.
To You Mother
May the Lord comfort you in your wailing heartbreak
When you want to scream why
When you remember your sweet girl and the ache cuts deep
To You Mother
May the Lord comfort you as the years pass by and you remember what was going to be
When you remember what could have been
When you remember the dreams you had for her
To You Mother
May the Lord comfort you when you look at her pictures and remember over the years
May you remember she is in the arms of Jesus, completely and wholly loved
May you remember she is safe now and happy always
To You Mother
When your dreams are filled with the raging Guadalupe River, may the Lord comfort you with still waters
The still waters where your daughter sits at peace.
