“I’m just….” have you ever caught yourself saying that? I’m just a mother. I’m just a wife. I’m just an assistant. It’s so easy to write off our roles as little or meaningless. I remember when I was working as a teller at a bank when people asked me what I did for a living I would sheepishly answer with “I’m just a bank teller”
Have you noticed that sometimes we can be our own harshest critics and our own stumbling blocks? As a Christian woman, I would compare myself to the girl who worked at the Church doing amazing ministry work or one of my uber successful friends finishing up their master’s degree, or even that person I knew traveling the world as missionary. I looked at them with eyes of wonder. Thinking about the impact they were making wishing I was doing something more “important” with my life. I will never know what people thought when I told them that I was a bank teller but whatever they thought was probably not nearly as bad as what I thought about myself.
The truth is that in every role that God gives us there is purpose. If you’re a mom God has entrusted you with being a leader and preparing the next generation of humans. If you’re an assistant God has given you important details to manage and your own set of co-workers to impact. If you’re a bus driver, you literally have a moving ministry full of people who could use your encouragement.
Half the battle is believing that you’re not “just” and the other half is having the confidence to OWN who you are and what you do. God has entrusted you with the very role that you are in and it’s not little. In fact, if we choose to shift our attitude towards our role we might even see that it could be a world- changing thing.
