As I prepare for Winter Break, I try to think of activities to keep my son engaged and centered over the 2 weeks of no school. After days of research and seeking guidance, I found that daily journaling was the best option for us during this year’s holiday break. I have always loved journaling and writing to keep myself occupied and including my son on this therapeutic activity of mine seemed to be the coolest idea ever!
What is Journaling, you ask!? The best definition I found was through Very Well Mind and it states that journaling is the practice of keeping a diary or journal that explores thoughts and feelings surrounding the events of your life. Journaling, as a stress management and self-exploration tool, works best when done consistently, but even occasional, sporadic journaling can be stress relieving when the practice is focused on gratitude or emotional processing. One of the most effective ways to reduce stress with journaling is to write in detail about feelings and thoughts related to stressful events, as one would discuss topics in therapy, and brainstorm solutions, but there are several different ways to practice journaling. The method you choose can depend on your needs at the time, and your personality; just do what feels right.
My son, Romeo, and I took a trip to our local Barnes & Nobles in search of a journal that we both would adore. We found the perfect journal to meet our needs! Find a journal that fits you & your little one.
You don’t have to purchase the Q&A Journal set that we did. You can even start out with a blank sheet of paper with your little one. My first journal was the 5-Minute journal because I wanted something quick and simple that didn’t require a lot of time. Journaling will allow you to start and end each day with gratitude. Thousands who journal have seen increased happiness, better relationships, and have become more optimistic. As a mom, I know how rushed you can be for time but this simple 5-minute activity can really help center you and your little one over the holidays and into the new year!
Find a peaceful place.
We love going outside but due to the weather changing, we found that it was best for us to put pillows all around us on the couch or on the floor in an open space in our living room. It’s not cluttered, and it brings us a sense of relaxation when we sit down to begin.
Set a time and stick to it.
Journaling is so beneficial, but you have to get your mind in a routine. Romeo and I prefer mornings after we eat breakfast which is before we deal with the negative energy of the world and at night to rid ourselves of the negative energy before bed. Lunch time may be perfect for you and your little one so try it out and see what works. Whatever you decide, pick a time, and stick to it!
