“The American flag represents all of us and the values we hold sacred.”

America is about to celebrate a huge milestone. That’s right, our nation’s 250th Birthday is right around the corner! Parades, barbecues, and fireworks are about to take center stage and a great way to get in the 4th of July spirit is with this fun, American Flag Paper Plate craft! It requires simple supplies and its streamers waving in the wind will add a patriotic splash to your celebration. My kids loved making their flags and plan to give some out to relatives to brighten up their homes this 4th of July.
Here’s what you’ll need to create a red, white, and blue paper plate flag:
- White paper plates (I used heavy duty so they wouldn’t bend)
- Glitter scrapbook paper (white or silver for the stars)
- Hole punch
- Twine
- Glue stick or glue dots
- Stapler
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Blue craft paint
- White and red streamers
- Ruler
- Paint brush sponges
- Star to trace with (I drew my own on construction paper and cut it out, but you could use a small star cookie cutter!)

Directions:
First, make your star or use a cookie cutter to trace stars onto the glitter paper. I folded my scrapbook paper so I could get more stars out of each cut.

Next, flip a paper plate over and using your ruler, trace a line right down the middle. Cut it in half. This will give you two flags.

Using the paint sponges, paint your plate blue.

Once it’s mostly dry, use the glue dots or glue stick to place your stars.

Cut your streamers whatever length you prefer. Alternate the red and white to resemble the stripes on our flag and staple them to the plate.

Use the scissors to cut them in half length-wise to make more “stripes”. This will make them flow beautifully, too!

Finally, punch a hole in the top of the plate and tie the twine through it. Now you can hang up your flag and let it fly in all its glory this 4th of July!

I hope you and your kids (or grandkids) have a blast making these paper plate flags, and that they make your 4th of July even more special!
As the fireworks and American flags fly this 4th, lets appreciate this incredible country that we are so blessed to live in and the brave men and women who defend it. Here’s to the American heroes past and present, who have made this a nation worth fighting for and have provided us the freedom we have today.
