In a COVID-19 world, it can feel like everything has been turned on its head. Every single industry has had to adapt to a “new normal,” and in many ways, that includes significant changes. One aspect that has become even more important to pay attention to in this new normal is the values of the companies and institutions we interact with.

Universities are no exception. As schools have rushed to make sure they can support their students during a global pandemic, it’s in many ways easier than ever to see a school’s values on display. While no organization is perfect (including Christian colleges), now is a great time to observe Universities since their values are manifesting themselves in new ways. Here are few things to watch for that might indicate if the faith-based school you’re considering is a good fit for your child
- An Orientation Towards Service – One of the easiest ways to see if a school is conducting itself based on biblical principles is to watch how that school has interacted with its students during this season. Was this particular University quick to make new rules protecting students from the coronavirus? Have they made sure to establish good support systems for online learning? Did they refund students for housing costs that no longer apply after moving home?
- A Strong Commitment to Faith – There are different kinds of Christian Universities, and one of the greatest distinctions is how faith plays a role on their campus. This isn’t to say one is better than the other; but it’s important to know whether a school was founded with Christian beliefs, or if it is currently, actively guided by the Christian faith.
- A Strong Sense of Community – The phrase, “we were created for community,” has become popular in many Christian circles lately, and it certainly rings true when it comes to faith-based colleges. An important part of the Christian college experience is interacting with other believers. It’s in rubbing shoulders with other Christ-followers that, “iron sharpens iron,” and spiritual growth happens.
There are lots of great options to choose from, so it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. And you’re not alone if you do feel that way. This is unfamiliar territory for everyone, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. Through prayerful research, your child can find a school that’s a perfect fit for them.
