I am a healthcare worker. My primary duties are usually in radiology, but within the last week my job description has changed. There is an Urgent Care in the clinic where I work and I have been helping out there. As of a few days ago, we began screening each person who walks into our facility: employees, patients, and visitors (each patient is limited to one). To do this, I wear a mask, goggles, and gloves.
My new role has been eye opening. It’s been exhausting. It’s been a bit frightening at times. I’d love for everyone to consider that the husband of a patient who was asked to wait in his car because of his recent travel to Europe could have easily stopped at the supermarket on his way home. While healthcare providers are asking lots of screening questions, with the safety precautions of PPE (personal protective equipment), the folks at Wal-Mart aren’t. Should they be? Who knows. We’re all figuring this out together, but please just be aware and be extra vigilant. Live in fear? Nope. But if you can avoid being out, don’t be out.
Also, think about this: your kiddo might not get COVID-19 by hanging around friends right now. But they might be exposed to strep throat. Do you really want to have to take your child to the doctor’s office right now? Trust me, you don’t. Not only do you not want to expose your child to the germs there, but healthcare providers are overwhelmed right now. Will they still provide fantastic, compassionate care? Yep, but they’re exhausted. If you can avoid being around people, don’t be around people.
I know the stress that comes with my job isn’t the same stress as worrying about how to pay bills or buy groceries. My heart goes out to the folks in that position.I am truly grateful to have a job right now. And as long as they need me, I’ll go in. I’ve been told to be prepared to be pulled to different departments or locations as our own staff becomes ill and must be home. And I’ll go. Because I want to help. I know everyone wants to help, but not everyone knows exactly how. Here is my advice: Don’t risk exposure to any sort of illness right now. Even if your state hasn’t yet taken an official stance on whether or not you can be out and about, PLEASE stay home, keep your kids home, stay safe.
Sincerely,
A healthcare worker
